What is the Debt Counsellor Training all about?

The National Credit Act was passed by Parliament in December 2005. This act makes provision for Debt Counselling programme to assist over- indebted customers. The programme needs to be implemented by Debt Counsellors who are competent and registered by the National Credit Regulator (NCR). For you to register as a debt counsellor you are required to undergo training, which is approved by the NCR, and comply with all the requirements set out in the National Credit Act and Regulations.

 

Target Audience

The program is targeted at individuals who have a:

  • Grade 12 certificate or equivalent NQF level 4 qualifications.
  •  Minimum of two years working experience in any of the following fields: o
    • Consumer protection, complaints resolution or consumer advisory services
    • Legal or Para-legal services
    • Educating or training individuals
    • Counselling of individuals
    • General business environment

 

The individual should also:

  • Display the ability to provide counselling or transfer skills
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage his/her own finances

 

How long is the training course?

  • The entire course consists of six modules
  • The course will be conducted over 7 days, but it will be broken into two phases
  •  First course will cover Legislation, Over-indebtedness and DC requirements
  •  Second course will cover DC process, Court process, Practical debt help.
    •  Mock examination
    • Revision
    • Open book examination on the 7th day. Pass mark is 80%
  • Leaners who don’t pass will be provided with one opportunity to rewrite free of charge
  • If a leaner fails again then a total of R1000 is payable for re -write.
  • An appeal process is available if a leaner is not happy with the marks obtained.

 Over-indebtedness and reckless lending

  • Over-indebtedness
  • Reckless Lending

 

Module 3

 Consumer Credit Information

 

• Consumer Credit Information

• Retention period for credit bureau info

• Maintenance and retention

• Submission of consumer credit info

• Removal of records

• Credit bureau report

• Similarities with credit reports

 

Module 4

 Debt Counselling

• Definition of debt Counselling and registration requirement

 

Module 5

 DC step by step process

• The entire process of conducting debt review

 

Module 6

–Referral to the court and Generic Knowledge for DC

• General Background to the Magistrate Court Act

• Basic Business Management

 

 

Examination

• 3-hour examination

Assessment and Examination

You will be expected to write a three-hour open book examination on the last (7th) day of the course

 

In which language is training conducted?

All the materials are in English which is the main language of instruction. The needs of learners will be considered and where possible, trainers can facilitate in the required language specified at the time of booking.

 

Method of payment

  • The fees for the entire course are R8 000. This amount includes facilitation, course materials, assessment and certification.
  • Payment to be made in cash or EFT only. Cheque payments are not allowed.
